I’m super excited about this one. Used Furniture Review just accepted a story of mine to be published some time soon. This journal has been putting out some amazing work from the likes of Randall Brown, Kim Chinquee, xTx, and Roxane Gay. So, yeah. Great stuff. The person whose work truly sold me on the journal, though, is Tawnysha Greene. I read her story, “Clean,” and said, “I want to be in a magazine that puts out work like this.” Holy smokes. Tawnysha, if you’re reading this, your work kicks ass. Wow.
Joe and I sometimes exchange emails and Facebook notes about writing. He’s somewhat new to the craft, but amazingly talented in a way that I find truly exciting. Anyway, when I read an early draft of “Cocaine Katrina” on Joe’s blog, I took the liberty of submitting it (without his knowledge) to Annalemma on his behalf.

I got a note today from Andrea Kneeland of Hobart saying that one of my stories has been accepted for an upcoming issue. I’m always happy to place my work, but I’m especially excited about this opportunity. Hobart is a damned fine journal, and the story is something I’ve had in my files for a very long time. At one point, I was going to abandon the thing, but after I received some encouraging words from a respected mentor, I made some tweaks and put it out into the world. Starting over a year ago. “Slips,” the piece in question, has taken a long time to find a home, but I couldn’t be happier with where it landed. It should be on Hobart’s site some time in late summer/early fall.
Natalie Edwards invited me to do a reading for the “Subtitles” series at the Three Walls gallery on March 18. Along with Natalie, I’ll be reading with Zach Dodson, and there will be sound art by Max Alexander and Eric Powell as well. I’m excited but terrified. I’m a total reading rookie, and don’t know what to expect.
Man, this is a beautiful book. It’s slim and approachable, just like the great short fiction within.
Lindsay Hunter and Mary Hamilton, whose stories are included in the collection, bundled a release party into yesterday’s Quickies! reading. I wish I remembered to take some pictures.
